This year-to-year noise is why investing professionals emphasize CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) over multi-year periods rather than any individual year's return. A 30-year CAGR tells you far more about an investment's track record than the best or worst single-year return.

The distinction between nominal and real annual returns is critical for retirement planning. The S&P 500's nominal average annual return is approximately 10–10.5% since 1957. After subtracting 3% average inflation, the real return drops to approximately 7%. Barista FIRE requires honest modeling. The part-time income must actually be reliable and sustainable β€” not a plan that depends on physical health, local job availability, or income that disappears with economic downturns. Building cash-flowing assets is the practical mechanism of passive income and financial independence.

Coast FIRE

Reaching $258,000 at 45 means you can stop all retirement contributions and the money will grow to $1,000,000 by 65 on its own.

Coast FIRE is psychologically powerful because it represents a true inflection point. Before reaching it, every decision about saving and investing has compounding consequences. After reaching it, you have guaranteed your retirement regardless of future savings behavior β€” assuming market returns remain historically consistent.

Many people reach Coast FIRE significantly before full FIRE, creating an opportunity to shift career choices. Rather than maximizing income in a demanding job to fund retirement, a Coast FIRE achiever can transition to more fulfilling, lower-paying work without compromising long-term financial security. The retirement is already funded; only present expenses need to be covered.

Example: A 35-year-old with $180,000 invested targeting $1,000,000 at 65 has already reached Coast FIRE at 7% returns β€” that $180,000 grows to approximately $1,370,000 in 30 years without a single additional contribution.
